Completion Design

Case History: Completion Design Peer Review

Introduction

NEXUS OFS was invited by to participate in a structured technical peer review process for a new development campaign targeting a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir. The client aimed to select the most suitable lower completion design from several competing options—balancing productivity, water control, and operational risk. NEXUS OFS’s role was to provide independent technical input, review design proposals, and guide the client toward a fit-for-purpose solution based on performance history and subsurface diagnostics.

Background and challenge

The operator was evaluating multiple completion strategies—including standalone screens, frac-packs, and ICD-based systems—for deployment in wells with variable permeability and strong aquifer support. Internal teams had differing views on optimal design, requiring a neutral, technically grounded review to facilitate final selection.

Scope of Work

NEXUS OFS contributed to the peer review by:

    • Attending cross-functional peer review meetings and internal presentations
    • Reviewing reservoir simulation results, historical well data, and design schematics
    • Evaluating risk of early water breakthrough, sand production, and execution complexity
    • Providing written and verbal feedback on proposed designs
    • Recommending and justifying the preferred solution for pilot deployment

Our Contribution and Recommendations

After technical evaluation and peer engagement, NEXUS OFS recommended:

    • Adopting a customized ICD completion with swell packers
    • Prioritizing inflow balancing to reduce risk of water coning
    • Avoiding frac-packs due to fracture propagation uncertainty in layered rock
    • Phased implementation: apply to 2 pilot wells, review performance, then scale up
