About Course

This guided project will help you develop essential skills for calculating well operating limits (i.e. Maximum Operating Annulus Surface Pressure – MOASP and Maximum Allowable Annulus Surface Pressure – MAASP), while increasing your awareness of industry best practices and well barrier principles. Using the provided well data and calculation methodology, you will gain hands-on experience applying theoretical concepts to practical scenarios.

Throughout the course, you will receive step-by-step guidance from our instructor, take quizzes to reinforce your understanding, perform detailed calculations, and submit your completed project.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand hydrostatic pressure, pore pressure, fracture pressure, and their gradients.
  • Perform accurate pressure calculations using wellbore fluid properties and depth.
  • Determine Maximum Operating Annulus Surface Pressure (MOASP) based on casing design and barrier principles.
  • Calculate Maximum Allowable Annulus Surface Pressure (MAASP) using formation fracture limits and hydrostatics.
  • Use real well data (depth, mud weight, casing shoe depth, pore & fracture gradients) to calculate pressures.
  • Construct pressure vs. depth plots to visualize the safe operating envelope.
  • Evaluate different scenarios (e.g., changing mud weights, fluid migration, trapped annulus pressure).
  • Identify risks of exceeding casing burst, collapse, or formation fracture pressures.
  • Recognize the importance of maintaining annulus pressures within the safe operating window.
  • Understand the relationship between casing strength, formation integrity, and well control safety.
